Earlier this month on Last Week Tonight, John Oliver examined felony murder and how the charge has fueled mass incarceration by allowing prosecutors to pursue first-degree murder for deaths people didn’t directly cause. A recent example back in the news is Harlem rapper Max B, whose 2006 mixtape Million Dollar Baby made him an underground rap star. Later that year, Max B’s stepbrother accidentally killed a man he was trying to rob, and Max B was sentenced to 75 years despite not being present at the robbery. After 16 years behind bars, a vacated conviction, and a reduced sentence, Max B is now free.
