We didn’t have to wait long for this year’s first major album release. The Weeknd has kicked off 2022 with Dawn FM, the follow-up to 2020’s After Hours.

The original follow-up sounded very different, but it was scrapped because it was too “emotionally detrimental” for a world in the midst of a pandemic. But as they say, it’s always darkest before the dawn. From the ashes of the scrapped project, The Weeknd crafted a concept album which takes listeners through limbo, guided by the soothing radio voice of Jim Carrey. “Picture the album being like the listener is dead,” The Weeknd told Billboard. “And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel.”
